Hello all...just a bit of an update...I'm headed into lockdown this evening with 17 eggs. I decided to move 6 of the eggs from the big incubator into the little one for hatching. That way I can lay them all on their sides incase they pip on the wrong end or some other problem arises. Yesterday I visited all the farm stores within a 30 mile radius. Was so tempting to pick up some chicks, but I was quite restraint! I decided in a few weeks I would get perhaps a couple of geese and turkeys just for fun. And even though I have 5 ducks, I ordered 3 more Cayuga ducklings. I just enjoy them so much and they are so pretty.

Kathryn- don't ever let a man tell you what you can and can't do. I was a young single mother of 3, been divorced now for 33 years and enjoy being self sufficent. It wasn't always easy, but I survived and have thrived. I enjoy simple and uncomplicated. I have power equipment that some men would love to have and I know how to use them too.

My poor boyfriend isn't allowed to touch them!! Sending good thoughts and karma your way!

My eggs are on Day 6 now! I used my mini-Mag lite to candle a few of them and saw blood vessels and little dark spots developing!!! I'm going to wait until Day 10 to candle all of them so I can be sure of who is developing. I have brown and white eggs. I did feel like the air sacs on some of them were at the small end, though. I'm not sure what that means. They started out laying on their sides on the wire and out of concern for that I laid a little runner of paper towel down and propped them large end up. So we'll see! I guess it's still early enough maybe they can turn around and the air bubble will float to the top. What do you think? What humidity are you all running? I have the LG still-air and started at like 50-55%. My air sacs seemed tiny and I am woriied about that so I have been letting the humidity drop to about 20% before I add more water. AAAAAAGGGGHGHHHHH! So many little things we can mess up, huh?

Hi all, I have one of those foam incubators too.

Out of my 2 duck eggs, one has made it to day 23 and tomorrow I get to put it to the home made hatch box for LOCKDOWN.
Duckie is coming soon & I'm so eggcited.

I got a Genesis 1588 and an egg turner and it came with a free candling led light. I love the turner & light.
Highly recomend the tiny led candling lightover the other led lights unless you can rig it so the lip of the light touches the egg shell. It is important because it directs all the light to the egg and not glare out. You can use some electrical tape to make a ring or a cone around the light end.
I'm so bad...I look at the eggs everynight. & take some pics too.

Here is Duckie.

That was taken last week. Its much bigger now.
Here is my bator with some real eggs & some easter eggs filled with sand to help hold in the heat.

And her is my home made hatch box.

I have a hatch box beacuse it allows me to set eggs every week into the bator and not worry about lock down. I have 2 ducks and they will give me 14 eggs a week if they don't go on strike.
Besides, lock down has a different set of requirements. Lower heat & higher humidity.
I've made it so that the hatch box is easy to clean.. I hear hatching can be very messy.

I'll find out soon.
Hope Duckie hatches out OK.

I've learned a lot thus far just from the BYC folks.

Isn't it great to see the veins and dark spot (heart?)!! I was was so excited when I finally saw something.

I am not sure about what size the air sacs should be. I was just wondering that myself, I think I will do a little detective work on BYC. I will let you know if I find anything out. It seems that the highest humidity I can achieve is about 25%, but have read to no worry about it until lockdown if you are using a still air incubator. I heat my house with a wood fireplace, so things get really dry inside. I have a humidifier running also.

I am also worried about all the little things that can go wrong.

I love your separate lockdown box!! That makes so much sense!

My mini mag light has a rubber thing that goes over the end, it works great for candling.

Thanks for sharing the pics!!
