First Time Hatching Anyone With Me??

Late...humm...tofu...The only place I can think of is the Vegan place across from the WOW Hall.

Right now I'm hatching mixed breeds.

My Hens: Australorp, Light Brahma, Delaware, Dorking, Easter Egger, Mottled Java, Buff Orpington, Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Red, Sussex, Ancona, Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Cochin (white), Columbian Wyandotte, Cornish, Hamburg, Lakenvelder, Partridge Rock, White Rock

My Roos: Blue Andalusian, Cornish, Delaware, Dorking, Easter Egger

I also have Cayuga Ducks/Drake and a Blue Swedish duck. I'm putting a dozen in the incubator tomorrow.

- I was thinking of buying a hovabator at the local ranch store. They're on sale right now $39.99...basic model. No fan, no turner.

blue - where in the world are your other ducklings? You can't have just one!!

I'm finding that I'm doing things I thought I never could. This morning, after watching and waiting for 2 days for a chick to break loose of the egg, I went ahead and opened the incubator grabbed it and pulled the very dry egg shell lining off it it. It was definately on it's way to being shrinkwrapped. Poor little thing. I hope it's neck and legs straighten out soon! Another baby was zipped and popped out when I put it back. Then I had to leave for work. So...as of this morning I've got 13/16 chicks..Not a bad percentage. Cute little mutt babies!

He is still in the bator.

My son is the stand in duck for now.

So about the fan.
You can yank one out from an old computer and glue it to your bator.
For the wire part. you'll need to look for an old 12V AC plug like the old cell phone plugs and hook it together.
Use a surge protector when you test which one is "red " or "black"

Eventually you'll want a turner.
Good luck!

Thanks, Blueducklings! I just candled them, using a mini maglite, and cupping my hand around the end of the flashlight, and setting the egg against my cupped hand. I am seeing mostly dark blobs, along with lighter, non blobby areas. Does this sound right? I looked at the pictures and videos of candling, but ???? I don't see any veins, etc. Maybe I need a better way of candling them?

Are you finding that the lens of the light is hitting the egg and the light is shooting out from the edge of the light?
IF you are, you need to tweak the light.
You gan go to the local hardware store & buy a rubber washer that wil fit the ring of teh washer.
Set it on the lip of the light & glue it on ot elect. tape it on. YOu will get a nicer fit for the egg to sit on & the light won't blind you. You'll be able to see better.
Also, when you handle the eggs, try not to use your bare hands. Wear gloves so the oil from your paws don't mess up the egg.

Sorry...the coffee hasn't reached the fingers yet.

Thanks for the advice! I got a nice gasket on the end of the flashlight, and now can see much better! Looks like 22/24 are developing. One of the possible duds has a crack in it--so i am definitely throwing it away! I can live very nicely without an exploded egg in the incubator!

candled a few tonight and saw a lot of black
nothing noticeably moving about.
ugh. hope that's okay.

there was one that i don't see much sign of
anything, but it doesn't smell, so i'm inclined
to let it stay in the 'bator

anyone think that's the wrong approach?
