I'm going to try incubating again in another few weeks. Only Eggly hatched the last batch because I had a little 3 egg incubator and 2 power outages. He hatched with a b12 deficiency but I fixed it with crushed solution and sugar water. Now I have 23 other chicks from mcmurray so I have my hands full with these guys. Good luck with that chick of yours.

As far as breeds, I have 1 female Astrolorp, 2 Plymouth Barr Rocks, and 2 Easter Eggers. The Astrolorp did get broody last fall, but I wonder if I just leave some eggs in the nesting box (separated from the rest of the flock), will she turn broody, or do we have to wait until she goes into it herself??

As far as I know, you are going to have to wait for your hens to get the urge. My EE was often broody and proved to be a good mom but all the hens that I have had go broody have done it when the weather was warmer but I live in Southern Oregon. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I'm wondering if the Astrolorp that went broody last fall will ever do it again. She is now the lowest on the pecking order, and the rooster is on her constantly. I am going to have to separate her and another hen that he is riding way too much, too much back irritation and feather loss. It's getting warmer here, in Central Texas, so I can't use the hen saddles much longer unfortunately. PLUS, that darn rooster attacks me every time I go in the run!! Only me, so I really want some babies, hopefully another rooster that I can use to replace him. I think I can find him another home. He's only aggressive with me, no one else. Go figure!

I havnt been on in a while, super busy planning a garage install on my vacation next week.

So 2nd hatch i have pips starting tonight. I did 41 eggs, 20 were not fertilized or had blood rings. I have 21 that look good when i candled last. My other 4 from the 1st hatch are a month old and doing great. The hatch date is actually tomorrow so we will see how i do out of 21. That will be my last hatch for a while as that will give me 50ish chickens. Oncei sort out the roosters i may do one more hatch this year.
