first time hatching

as long as the other chicks don't bother the one with the unabsorbed egg sac, he should be okay. Otherwise isolate him until he absorbs it all - this is what feeds them and gives them a good start on life.

How long does it take a chick to hatch after it has pipped cause I have one that pipped about 40 hours ago and hasn't hatched but piped a day early. Please help I'm new to this !!!

Mine takes up to 18 to progress from pip to zip. After 40 hours I'd start assisting. Chip away a little bit of the shell around the pip hole with a pair of tweezers, check if the little one is still o.k. in there. If it is, remove a bit more shell and dampen the inner membrane (covering the chick) with a wet Q-tip. Check if you can see any active blood vessels in the membrane. If you don't see any continue chipping away the shell, but move towards the chick's abdomen and check the membrane there for blood vessels and signs of the yolk sac. If everything is clear you can remove enough of the shell and the membrane to allow the chick to kick free and hatch. Check here for pics and more info:

Glad to hear your chick is o.k.

Without a clear pic we can't tell what's going on with the one chick, IF it's yolk then he's going to need some vitamins, It maybe not be that though. there are other things it could be. if the chick was sticky, it could be a chunk of gooy stuff on him so taken a qtip with warm water to clean him up may do the trick. Really can't make that call without a pic though... if he's improving and doing OK, I would say perhaps it was something else....
