First Time Incubating. *Pics*

Colourful, thanks! I will get a second bator. Just not sure what yet. Think I will save my pennies and get a bigger one than that. I would like to one that holds at least 30-40. I showed my hubby the pics of the fridge a few pg's back and he reckons he could make that apart from working out how to do temp control! He's a qualified in aircon! So he knows how to convert. Just need to get an adapter of some sort like a heat regulator or something. Only thing is having 160 or sleighs in at a time I wouldn't know what to do with lol have seen these home made kits you can purchase on amazon. Thinking maybe get something like that and then a decent egg turner. That's got to be a lot better than self turning. More precise so less risk of sticking. I feel like I'm clock watching somedays. Lol
Has your egg survived? How they doing today?
Sleighs?? iPhones bah! Should say EGGS! Haha

[/IMG][/IMG]Right this was the reason a lot of eggs I had, i removed. Do you think I did the right thing? The first pic is the last one of these that looked like it but kept invade I was wrong. (Would have hated myself for killing good eggs!) the second pic is the only one of the 6 silkie eggs I put in where I can see a blob! Shows pretty much what I can see. The first pic shows this red line that seems to travel most of the way round and through the egg, but have not seen anything of a body or anything in it it's also light weight and the air sac makes nearly a circle as supposed to the other eggs they're's all go down the side a lot more.
So am I right in saying this would be called blood ring! And at day 12 this is non-viable and should be removed before my other eggs are infected ?!?
Thanks. Just find the obvious sometimes hard to decide on! Thanks

Had to add this third pic which is the same as the second! Lol

I don't know how soon a fertile egg comes out but I do know that eggs can be fertile for up to two weeks after they mate.

Hatching went okay for me so far.
Out of the 12 Araucana eggs I bought, 11 were viable and all hatched.
Out of the 13 Australorp eggs, 10 were viable and 5 have hatched and there are more in the incubator. I took them out to give them a gentle tap when I took out my chicks (who were making a right mess of the incubator) and I got three to tap back.
Out of the 12 Barneveder eggs... well, they didn't do so well. Only 7 were alive on day 18 and 6 have hatched and I haven't heard any life from the last.

I wish you luck if you decide on a home-made incubator! I don't have the knowledge or courage, so I will live vicariously through those who build them, lol.

Update; I lost a Lavender Araucana chick because it drowned in the water.

This is the first time it has happened to me. I've replace their container with a lid filled with marbles, so hopefully it won't happen again. I used the store bought container for my last set of chicks, and had no problems at all....

Not sure i think only one pic showed up so here's the other two.
The last pic showing is the 'bad egg!'

Top one looks great, bottom egg looks like it has the Blood-Ring-Of-Death. That's if it is day 12. You should take it out as soon as possible or it could infect the other eggs.

I don't know how soon a fertile egg comes out but I do know that eggs can be fertile for up to two weeks after they mate.

That means they can be put in an incubator or under a broody so long as the egg was laid less than two weeks before, but only if it's been properly stored. I don't think it will suddenly start developing after a couple of weeks in an incubator. Usually, if you have development by day 10, your not getting any. But the darker an egg is, the harder it is to tell.

Just checking in after a busy weekend... congrats on the hatches!

My first ever babies hatched last night/this morning... 7 mallards. That's all 7 eggs that developed out of the 8 I set. Still have 17 OEGB eggs in the hatcher, 3 with pips. Today is day 20 so still a bit to go. It's very exciting!

hi everyone i am on day 11 of my first go at hatching. I set 8 bbs rock, 6 barred rock, and 6 ee eggs. Unfortunately my po didnt hold them for me so they sat in 9 inches of snow all day. Candled last nite looks to be 9 developing 5 bbs rocks and 4 barred rocks. I havent taken any eggs out yet the plan was to do it on day 12. Is that a good idea or should i wait on some of them.

Congratulations MJ!!!

If you have no development at day 12, I think it's a safe bet that they're not hatching, which is a shame.

Keep us updated!
