First Time Incubating! SO EXCITED!!

Help please!! I have 3 eggs that have pipped!! They are all mispositioned. I can see their beeks moving underneath the membrane. I did remove a little bit of shell, so I could get a better look at what was going on. What do I do now? Do I need to open a membrane just a teeny tiny bit for them? I am doing my research, but any help would be appreciated. #'s 16, 12, 20..

I can't believe they pipped! I had given up on them!!! Was going to open them up tonight if nothing was going on with them.

This is what I did with my last malposition who ended up hatching on her own.....Left the shell as you have it in the pic, made sure the membrane was open enough that they were getting air, took some A and D ointment(I didn't have bacitracin without pain killer) and warmed it to a thin film on my fingers then put it thinly on all exposed membrane. Wet some toilet paper in a big wad and loosely wrapped the shell well away from the opening so that it was getting moisture but still allowed the chick to break out of shell and put it back in the incubator with the humidity at around 70 and walked away. Actually I fell asleep, it was 3 oclock in the morning and I was exhausted. Woke up 5 hours later and checked on her and she was hatched out and starting to dry out.
I was told this once and it made perfect sense to me-A malpositioned pip is just the internal and external at the same time, what you think is taking a lot more time to hatch is actually the normal amount of time it's just that you can now see what's going on so it seems to take longer. Keep us posted please

Looking at 16 and 20, they aren't bad, those are close enough they should be fine so the only one you should have to really keep an eye on is 12. 12 is what my dingbat malposition looked like.

I would at least make sure the membrane is open so they can breath if you haven't yet.

The humidity is up around 72% now and I wrapped them separately in a damp paper towel. Dabbed some warm water on the membrane. All 3's membranes are open and they all appear to be breathing ok. I wonder how #12 is positioned since it's almost at the way other end. Funny you mentioned being exhausted...I had 5 hatch so far, starting late Sunday night so I haven't had much sleep and have a terrible cold/sinus thing going on. When all is quiet and I should take a nap, I start watching the babies playing instead...Lol

Thank you for replying. You definitely have helped to calm my fears.

Wow! So congrats on the assist finding it's strength!! Awesome. My internet has been out most of the morning so I am just now catching up on everything. The three that pipped....how are they doing? Egg 20 is close to the air cell marks you have, may actually have tapped into the air cell because they may be a little bigger than your last mark. 12 is definitely a bugger and I'd watch that one closely. The actual pip hole for 16 seems to be right in the middle too by the way the pic looks, so he could be trouble.
I've heard lots of people do what DCAT did w/bacitration or neosporin. I use warm water on a q-tip to keep it moist as I work.

I had to read this 3 times before I figured out what dcat was saying: I was told this once and it made perfect sense to me-A malpositioned pip is just the internal and external at the same time, what you think is taking a lot more time to hatch is actually the normal amount of time it's just that you can now see what's going on so it seems to take longer. -but I finally got it. I think maybe a blond moment. It does make sense though if you look at it that way. Never thought about it like that.

My opinion: if they seem strong and they aren't in an extremely weird position, I'd let them ride it out for a while and see what they do. If they start seeming weak I'd open the shells a bit for them. #12 really worries me especially.

Guess it's time to go back to crossing fingers. Good luck!

I AM NOT BELIEVING THIS! I have another pip very close to the bottom of the egg. I little closer to the bottom than # 12.

Could I have done something wrong during incubation for this to keep happening? I had a little trouble with temp and humidity, but nothing majorly too high or low. I turned them religiously 4 times a day, even during the night. I followed proper protocol's during storage and keep them titled back and forth.

AmyLynn.....I was so excited this morning when I saw him bouncing around in there. He's is now enjoying the brooder with his hatch mates. :)

I can't believe I have 4 hatching right now. I thought I was done!! I was gonna clean the bator so I could put more eggs in and start another batch. Lol Thank you so much for all your help during this exciting time for me and all the helpful info that you've given. I'm glad I had you guys to share it with. BYC is the only place I have like minded friends. My hubby doesn't care one way or the other about the whole process, and everybody else calls me "the crazy chicken lady." Jokingly of course.

I thought I would be posting pics of eggtopsies later, but maybe I'll be posting more little fuzzies instead.

The neosporin worked great!! It showed the veins in so much more detail. It definitely let me know that it has a lot more work to do with receding those veins.

Amylynn, it was probably just my writing. I write like I talk and forget that sometimes I need to add a little more detail so that everyone else understands what im trying to say lol.

Stephenson, great news! I come here for my support too. Hubby doesn't get my anxiety over them hatching and the kids think I worry too much too but, we all enjoy the babies when they get here and hubby is happy about me getting so silly over the new babies.

I bet you were excited! That's awesome. Did you forget to tell them when you went into lockdown what end they were supposed to pip from? lol Actually, this is what hatching 101 thread says about reasons:
Common reasons of Malpositions are:
Eggs are set with small end up.
Advancing breeder hen age and shell quality problems.
Egg turning frequency and angle are not adequate.
Inadequate % humidity loss of eggs in the setter.
Inadequate air cell development, improper temperature and humidity regulation, and insufficient ventilation in the incubator or hatcher.
Imbalanced feeds, elevated levels of mycotoxins, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Lower than recommended temperatures in the last stage of incubation.
Actually when you hand turn you are supposed to turn an ODD number of times during the day- 3/5/7 ect, this is so they are not spending the night on the same side every night, thus leaving them in the same position at the longest intervals without being turned. I don't know if that will cause the malepositioning though.

It just wasn't clicking...lol Then it hit me the comment was made in reference to the time, not the breaking through the egg. A chick would internally pip and rest for x amount of time and then externally pip and rest for x amount of time, but a malesposition they are skipping the internal to external pip time...and doing both at once thus missing a resting period. I did finally understand.
