First time momma

The current situation is that I've got one very boisterous chick, and 2 pipped eggs, I can see the fragments around the pip twitching occasionally... Only problem is that my chick has now been in there for well over 24 hours, and I'm wondering how long it can safely stay in there without access to food and water? It's fluffy now and could probably be moved to the brooder if it wasn't for the pipped eggs. Any advice would be great xx

Chicks can survive in the bator w/no food and water for three days if neccessary. Many people won't take their chicks out until the end. With that being said, I take mine out a few hours after they hatch. Once they are up and running and warm I pull them. I like to have more than one when I do, but it doesn't neccessarily happen...lol. I believe the hatcher should do what's comfortable for them. I keep my humidity in my bator 75%+ at hatch so I am more than comfortable pulling them out. If your humidity is up there good and you are comfortable taking him out, then do so. If you are worried about it affecting the others that have pipped, then leave him in there and rest assured that he will be fine for another 24 or 48 if necessary.

So I decided to move my bigger chick into the brooder, as it started really viciously pecking at the new little one. I made the transfer really fast and put in a warm damp cloth to keep the humidity up. Can still see movement in the unhatched egg now I'm just worrying about my big chick being warm enough! Does the worry ever end?! Can feel a sleepless night coming on xx

Hello, it's fine for them to stumble around on the others it won't hurt them, a lot of first timers are worried about that, but once you start hatching more, you won't even notice them doing that. All chicks hatch on differnt time periods, when I hatched my first batch all of mine hatched on day 21 so you really can't tell when they will hatch. But what ever you do, don't panic and don't try to help the baby by breaking their shell, only do this if your highly educated, but still you have a very high chance of the chick not making it, it's best just to stay patient and calm. Hope this helped. Put pictures up so I can see the newbies.

I Was hatching 4, but as i've written above, unfortunately one didn't make it. Currently got 2 hatched, 1 yet to hatch, but pipped and moving. now just worried about the chick i've moved to the brooder, i'm pretty sure she's warm enough but she is just sitting around lazily, i think she might be resting though, as she's been really energetic up until now. How much do day old chicks usually sleep?? I'm assuming being babies they have to sleep a lot of the time. xx

Aww, I'm sorry it's really hard loosing babies, had the baby already piped? Usually chicks will play for a little, run around, eat drink and then sleep for about 10min. Or until woken up, but at night they will probably only wake up 3 times to do this and that's normal. Yes all babies do sleep a lot, but when the chicks get older to adult age they will take one or two naps in the day and then sleep thru out the night. The only disadvantage of keeping babies is that they sometimes will peep really loudly trying to call for their mother on and on in the day, but other than that they are super sweet and fun to watch. I will warn you though it is hard watching them grow up because you just want to have them stay little FOREVER!

It was difficult when it happened, it pipped and then overnight it bled out. One of the lovely ladies on here told me that the blood vessels probably hadn't dried out, and then the chick pipped through it by accident nvm, wasn't anyone's fault x

The answer to that question...no....lol You just have different things to worry about as they grow.

You do have a light at one end of the brooder right? Temp under the light should be between 90-95 degrees. They will go in and out under the light as they need the heat. If they are too cold they will let you know with their loud chirps. (Of course if there is only one in there he may just yell because he's alone...lol.)
