First time owner! Any experience with Golden Laced Wyandotte colors?

I am hoping to get some silkies too. Waiting patiently for my call that they are in. Also want a couple of polish, they are adorable! Btw...my silver is turning out to be quite the beauty! Shes is the spunky one. I call her Bea. Love those girls.

So my little Lilly is VERY obviously a silver now.. Which is so cool bc i originally wanted silver laced but they werent supposed to be available from where we order (Mt. Healthy) until May so I settled for Golden, which are just as beautiful. I have to say, Lilly isnt NEARLY as friendly as the others, a lot more skittish and cautious, but i guess she would have to be for survival in the wild since silvers dont exactly blend in. Shes also stopped peeping now and is making the cutest little noises, like a cross between a peep and a hen clucking.. shes still the smallest and takes a little while to figure things out, i think partly out of fear. I took them for their first adventure outside and they were terrified but i was able to get all of them to come to me when i called, including Lilly, who acts like im a hawk when we're inside lol. Here are some updated pics of my girls from 2 days ago:
Starlett (the one who LOVES me, shes all black so far with a little yellow on face, belly, and a couple of gold streaks on the feathers on her shoulders, still solid black wings

Minnie, shes popping out feathers EVERYWHERE!! She was the runt but so far is the most developed

Goldie, the biggest (i have to use both hands to pick her up now, and HUGE feet lol)

Little Lilly, like I said, very much a silver (thanks for the help guys, you are all pros!!

Lacie, who is inseparable from Bumble Bea, both beautiful! And not huge fans of me unless we're in the big scary outdoors lol

And her partner in crime, Bumble Bea

Mine are on day 16 in the incubator. I have 4 silkies and 4 bantams of some kind, the silkie eggs are looking great, the bantams have hardly lost any water and the chicks are huge. The eggs are around the same size but the bantams weigh 3 or 4 times more than my silkies.. so hopefully by the end of the week ill have new babies to share. Im thinking about investing in some Ayam Cemani, they are SO beautiful!! But perhaps i should raise what i have first ;) So glad Bea is doing well for ya!!

Your girls are beauties!!! Im trying to stay away from our local feed store.....i just KNOW I will be picking up a couple more chicks! However, i need to stay strong till my coop is finished. Then we shall see....lol.

Great Pics! We opted for wyandottes too- 3 silver and 3 golden. We are first timers as well, and wanted chickens for the eggs and for insect control. Ours are 5 days old. How often did you pick them up when you first got them? We have had ours since yesterday morning and they are very skittish- she run to other end of the coop when I put my hand in. We always announce ourselves though.

Heheh. Our Golden & Silver Laced Wyandottes are the same way. We handle them quite a bit.

There are a few things you can do. First of all, chickens are terrified of hawks and instinctively run when something comes from above, so scooping them up from underneath may work out better for you. Also, try holding them close to your chest. It makes them calmer. Don't forget the paper towels :p

i agree with SJChickens.. from the time i brought them home ive very softly talked to them.. when i walk in their room i always say "hi babybirds!!! Hows my baby birds??" This came in handy on our field trip outside because when i called them back using "baby birds" they immediately ran back to me- which was awesome!
I started by slowly putting my hand inside the brooder and laying it, palm up and still, on the bedding until they get curious and check me out. Then very softly petting their bellies as they come over and i didnt try to pick them up while doing it, just petting them while their feet are on the ground. Then when theyre not as scared anymore i started picking them up, always from under the belly and supporting the feet with my other hand so they dont panic, moving slowly.. most of mine loved being on my chest, tangled in my long hair, or just fell into a deep sleep in my hand. I probably spent every bit of 6 hours a day in with them, not always handling but just watching and talking to them. Now i dont spend as much time but theyre SO excited when i come in. Tomorrow we're moving them to a 110 gal feed bin (since they need more room and my silkies and company should be here this week sometime).
