Hello, I'm Nomi from California. I have 2 full grown chickens that I raised and I've had them since august 2020. The reason I joined this site because I want to be able to get real answers and help from other chicken caretakers. I was first inspired to get chickens because of my uncle Jr who lives in Ohio has chickens and I would often face time him and ask questions about hens and chicks. When I first got them as chicks, he would always tell me not to get attached to them because chicks die to easy, but they're still alive so ha. I've only had these two so far and I do want more eventually, I bought them from a guy off craigslist. He said 1 of them is an Ameruacana ( I named her Hoop ) and the other is a wyandotte ( her name is goldie ) and for some reason Goldie is the only one laying :( . Although this is my first time owning chickens, I do currently have 11 other pets that live inside my house. I have a Chinchilla, 2 hermit crabs, 2 tortoises, 1 very fluffy hamster, a ball python, 3 cats, and a dog. I know it sounds like a lot but It's my routine to care for all of them. I don't get any help from my 3 older brothers or parents, because they "didn't choose the ranch life" and "the animals like me more" ( i'm like, they like me more because i actually take care of them and don't leave for 2 weeks without at least putting water in their habitats ) and even though I didn't ask for a dog, hermit crabs, a snake, or a chinchilla, my family brought them home because they thought they could care for animals on their own, but they all eventually asked me to take over. I never minded the fact and still don't mind that they brought home pets and at some point didn't want them. anyways back to chickens. I live on a horse ranch that my uncle Eddie owns, because he ropes horses. So I was raised on the farm scene, and they've surprisingly never had chickens until I came around with them. And I just have so many questions, and I would ask my uncle Jr for more advice, but I don't feel like he's a reliable source for answers, plus he's mean. I wanna know things like: why my girl Hoop won't lay eggs and why Goldie keeps shaking her tail every time she sees me, and since none of my family in California has had chickens before, I can't ask them anything because all they know is horses.( not trying to sound rude, I love the horses and my family, there is just no one to talk to about chickens ) and I try not to used google for answers to questions because, its never a definitive answer. so far I've read some other peoples post and this just seems like a very trustworthy site for answers, so I just had to join. I don't really know if anyone will see/read this, but If you do, say Hi or interact somehow so I know I'm not alone :D

Hi Naomi, welcome to BYC!
You seem to be a mature teenager and I'm sure your family is proud of you.
As for Hoop not laying and Goldie shaking her tail, can you post in the emergency section?https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures.10/
Include *pictures of both chickens, their poop, and their housing.
Also post *description of the problem and the onset time, *the type and brand of feed that you use, as well as any other information that you believe might help.
In the meantime; * look around their vents for lice and check for mites on the roost (Run a white paper towel across the roost at night. Blood on the towel means mites are there.)* Look at their poo and note worms, odd colors or textures.* Run your hands under their belly, do they feel swollen? *Are their combs red? *Are they active or lethargic?
Best of luck with your hens!

Hello, Nomi, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You are certainly not alone here. You now have the largest, best resource for chicken caretaking at your finger tips. You also have a group of people who care as much about their birds as you do yours so you have plenty of like minded folks to chat with and forge friendships with. Welcome aboard.
