First Time Poster/Looking for Hot Weather Tips

I've heard to avoid misting... or at least use as last ditch effort. Attracts flies. Many water containers--- freshened every day. Wet snacks are good--- I sprinkle watermelon & cantalope rinds (not too well picked!) with oyster shell. Girls love it in hot weather.... 'specially if it's in the shade where they like to hang in hot weather.

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome and helpful tips. To tell you a little more about us, it's me and my husband - both working full-time (stressful) jobs plus a 10-acre farm including 5 Quarter Horses, 2 Percherons, 2 Pygmy goats, 3 hens, 1 rooster, 13 pullets, 3 cockerels, 16 cats, 1 Standard Poodle, 1 Miniature Poodle, and 2 Toy Poodles. Some of our animals are a result of many rescue and foster efforts. Although we haven't been away together on vacation for more than 11 years, we love coming home to our farm every day after work and relish our weekends -- this is our little bit of heaven on earth. Looking forward to hearing and sharing more on BYC!

Well you never know, but I can say I live in southwest louisiana and two weeks ago we had a few days over 100 degrees and I lost a couple 9 week old chicks from the heat. They drank more than normal water that day and they ran out. I now have much bigger water jugs. I was disapointed and felt bad about it, but I learned a lesson..

I've lost one hen to this oppressive Texas heat .. My coop is in the shade, and I have a box fan blowing. She was out in the yard when she died. It is JUST.PLAIN.HOT! Good luck!
