First time raising meaties... Commerical feed versus Salatin ration???

Quote:
For comparison here is the grain and protein portion of a commercial feed from a mill that purchases grain locally:

Grain 62%
SBM 31%

Not too much different than Salatin's "Magic Ration".

One caution, a 1:1 substitution of Soybean Meal for Roasted Soy is not recommended since the Crude Protein and Amino Acid contents between the two are different. It should be .8:1.

I don't consider it a magic ration (I don't think anyone here said it was), just an option for those who want to mix their own meat bird ration that apparently works.

My primary reasons for having my own mixed are 1) price and 2) local ingredients mixed by a local company.

I just wanted to update with new information...

This weekend I spent several hours processing broilers with a friend who recently completed his one year apprenticeship with Salatin. The above formula is a bit outdated. Like many of his practices, this has evolved over the years since the books came out. He is going to try to get the new formula for me when he gets the chance, and I will post it.

It hasn't changed much, and the above is still considered a good ration, but just wanted to mention it in the interest of full disclosure.

When you get it please send me a Pm or Email with the updated info. I kinda figured it might have changed since that was the 1998 ration. Thanks for the info.
