Hello, I am trying to come up with a strategy to treat some mites. Thankfully my birds are rather healthy because I think they may have had them for awhile. Initially it was thought that they were being treaded by the rooster and we put little saddles on them. Most of them had grown their feathers back but now the rooster is picking his chest and they all are itching more than usual. It's a little disheartening to think that this problem has gone on so long without our realizing. It could be a combo of treading and mites but I'm sure I saw the mites when I was out in the coop cleaning it up.
My main issue is I'm not sure how I'm going to battle them when it's so darn wet here. The coop has an attached run which is on solid ground. I cannot be sure if I'm getting every last piece of litter and some of the poo composts into the ground and it's been raining for days. I'm fearing the the mites will simply hide in the dirt. Since they can live up to two weeks and crawl around even if I laid down rubber mats the mites would find a way back on the girls and my roo. I'm also reading that most of the suggested dusts will not work if wet. I'm looking for sprays and gathering as much information as possible.
Does anyone have experience battling mites in wet conditions? Not only have we been experiencing tons of rain but we also live at the bottom of a hill so we get a soggy yard very easily with wet weather.
I'm also worried about the birds getting wet when I treat them. I'm getting confused on if there is a dip for mites or not. I've not seen any of the mites on the birds but mostly evidence of itching. I haven't looked all of them over yet, though. I saw what appeared to be little black/brown mites crawling away when I removed some things from the coop such as bricks that leveled our waterers.

Also, for any broken skin I was going to use an ointment that I use on my skin. That's ok, right? That was going to be my next search once I got an idea of how to proceed with the treatment on the coop and the birds. A couple of them have been itching and might have broken skin. Not bleeding so to speak but almost looks like a torn blister.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Still cleaning the coop. Used some wood ash and DE on the girls and rooster tonite. Even when "docile" they hated it. Examined more birds and still do not see any bugs on the birds or eggs but they are def itching themselves. Are there any internal parasites that would cause this type of itching behavior? Saw a few brown spots on the tip on a buff orp's tail/rear feathers. This is mite waste or would it only be at the base of the feathers?
Sprayed some spinosad based spray all the base boards on the run where I saw the mites. I'm hoping it does something. The nestboxes are proving difficult to clean but it stays pretty dry in there. I'd like to get some essential oils but am using a mix of dish soap vinegar and antiseptic mouthwash to clean the coop. Someone said on here they heard that antiseptic mouthwash kills the mites on contact.
