I bought Prozap insectrin duster and Martin's Pen and Poultry at my local coop to treat what I think are lice (not red, but tiny brown bugs) on a chicken I have. They free range and coop is dusted with First Saturday Lime 2 x a month. When I got it home and read instructions, felt like I needed to buy a hazmat suit too! Talked about not getting it on my skin or clothing and cleaning immediately if that did happen and wearing long sleeves etc. Anyway, seems 😳. Any experience with these products appreciated. The other chickens seem fine although I have not yet closely examined them.

The reason I noticed this one, because I have been giving her salt soaks for what I thought might be internal laying issues. She is eating and drinking and isolated so I can get to her better...poop normal, but her bottom below vent is featherless and like a water balloon...since I have been soaking (4 days now) seems to be a tiny bit better, but vent and feathers there are clean, believe me-I know:) and comb is still red but top is drooped over. Has lost weight, I can feel breast bone. Still walking around and doesn't seem in distress. I let her free range for a few hours in the late afternoon and then put her back in her hotel. Not sure what the heck is going on, advice appreciated. Attached pics of directions that freaked me out and Betty in her bath...don't have a pic of her bum

I'm thinking it's not a mite problem, actually. Her bottom feeling like a water balloon is a sign of ascites (fluid build up in the abdomen). There are myriad reasons that might be happening. None are good. Is a vet an option?

I had read that too...:( vet not really an option-had thought about trying to use a large syringe to drain, but that seems too risky. Will try to keep her happy as possible until she is not happy:(

You can try the mite treatment, though. I meant to say that in my response.

I have a duck with ascites caused by internal laying brought about by genetics. I take her to the vet to be frained every few weeks. I took her today, as a matter of fact. Next week, I'm taking her to see about options like hormone implants or spaying to stop her from laying eggs altogether. No easy answers or solutions. I'm sorry. It's tough.

😕
