First time with a broody- hatch day is here-not sure what to do?!!??

thats awesome news ...hopefully she will hatch the rest for ya . im on day 12 of letting my blue laced red wyandott sit on her egg . yes i said egg . not ready for chicks in any way . just testing to see if she will hatch it ..... if not maybe i will let her sit on a couple eggs next year , just not interested in chicks right now ......im trying to get my rabbitry started , need that more than i need chicks .

The two that have hatched are already very adventurous! They get out from under Ida and walk around, pecking at the hay and Mom's feathers. There's one that is trying to zip out still and I'm hoping some of the others will still hatch.

I'm already wondering what they will look like once they grow up!

Oh those babies are adorable! One of mine is chipmunk striped, too.

I was going to take the rest of the eggs from our broody since no more have hatched and DH said we should give them till Thursday. DH is also planning to let Hazel back out with the flock Saturday. Is this a bad idea? The chick would be a week old then. How young can the chick be before joining the flock with mom? I shook one of the eggs and it sounded like something heavy was in it. I am betting it is a dead chick that quit developing or something like that. Guess we will see Friday when we take the eggs away and leave the brooder box open so Hazel can leave if she wants to with the chick.

I'm sorry if you're sick of chick pictures, but I just can't help myself!!!

Here is proud mom Ida with the first little blue chipmunk that popped out- it looks like chick #4 is blue as well, just not dry yet.

And chick #3 was a little yellow chipmunk! How cool!!

There's at least one more egg pipping now and another who is peeping a little. Doesn't seem to be anyone home in two others. So that leaves us with 2 other eggs that I can't really see at this point to know what's going on. I hope the next two make it out okay. Still hoping that at least one will be black like the little one that passed away. I'd say if 8 out of 10 hatch, even 6 out of 10, that's pretty good for a first time broody and her neurotic human.

On a side note it looks like maybe Ida's diarrhea has subsided, I hope for good. Until I can rinse off her hiney though, I've been putting paper towels under her. Still the little yellow chick is determined to sit right under her vent almost. Bless Ida's heart- she had a huge blowout earlier and waited with her rear in the air for me to clean it out and put clean towels back down.

I'm still amazed at how active the chicks are already. They don't go far from mom's side, but all of them have been out walking around and pecking at stuff. It's such a joy to watch them.

Keep posting the pictures.....we never get tired of looking at chickens and chicks!
Great hatch...
I peeked in on my Princess today and she is not interested in hands or people being any were near her... growl, trill and snap....
I will give her till Monday to get some babies hatched... she has 6 and I have noticed a 60% fertility rate in my back yard group.

Beautiful babies...
Good luck with Ida, sounds like she needs some electrolites or something....

Oh, wow! 4 babies! Clever girl! It's too cute how she lets you clean up after her. And then people say chickens are stupid! Well done, both of you. Hope when you log on later you'll have more good chick news!

Well, as of this morning it looks like we have 6 chicks with one more pipping- I hope it makes it out. That leaves three eggs. Ida had a little to eat this morning and a couple of the chicks pecked around in the food too. Looks like her diarrhea has subsided thankfully. Yesterday was a stressful day for her I'm sure. It was also much more humid and hot yesterday than it had been since she started sitting- I'm sure that didn't help her feel better either. (But it was good for the chicks!)

Oh and we have a solid blue chick! I can't tell what the other chick that hatched last night is, they wanna stay under Mom. It seems to be another yellowish chipmunk with more of a defined stripe than the first yellow chick. Anyways.....here's more pictures! haha
