First time with a broody- hatch day is here-not sure what to do?!!??

i would post a picture, but i didn't want to disturb her any more... she was really angry with me for looking in the first place....

Who Hoo... Princess has at least one more... She was very angry will me for taking her off the nest last night, so I didn't bother her too much this morning...
#1 was not under and I know I heard at least one peep from under moma..

Here's to hoping there are at least two more. I would like her to have at least a pass (50%)

There are never enough chicken pictures!

(funny storey, step son and I were chatting about chores.... He said "I cleaned the chicken litter already" .. he ment the cat litter... we had a great laugh.. I think they are all almost as bad as me some days!)

Since broody hen Hazel has been given plenty of time to hatch more chicks and was off the nest and walking around today we took the rest of the eggs from her today. I cracked them all open and all the ones that were left we bad. That was a stinky mess.

I don't know that I will get that smell out of my nose for a while.

I did finally get a picture of our only chick to hatch though. So here is a picture of our little lone chick and Hazel.


This chick is lighter than the EEs we got as chicks originally so I am curious to see what color she ends up being. I have no clue which of the EEs are her real momma either. It's not Hazel though because she wasn't laying when we gathered the eggs to put under her. I'm definately hoping this chick survives and we get to see what she grows up to look like.

Aww, I'm sorry the others didn't hatch, but Hazel looks quite proud of her one chick brood! I'm betting in favor of the chick being just fine. I've never seen such active and curious chicks as these hatched from a broody. It is fun trying to figure the EE colors out. They all end up looking different than what you think! Congrats! Well done Hazel!

Ida is still in her little area. I don't fully trust two of my oldest hens near the babies- they can be quite the little hussies. I'm working on getting the 'brooder house' ready (it hasn't had chicks in it for a couple years) and putting up a run around it. Hopefully they'll be out there by the weekend or first of next week. Then all the other birds can meet and greet through the fence!

Hoping by the time Ida gets tired of being cooped with them, they will be old enough to integrate into the flock full time.

I just found this thread this morning. Glad I didn't find it any soon, the suspense was terrible. I only made it to page 5 before I skipped 10 pages to find out the outcome...what a roller coaster ride! I am going to be terrible when I start my incubator for the first time next month! It was wonderful to see all your beautiful chickies! Keep the photos coming.... And yes I agree that this site is super addicting. My husband said he feels like I am having an affair...with chickens. Congrats to all!

hahaha Sorry about that! We know how to do the drama around here! Now that I have been through this, I hope if we ever do it again I won't be such a neurotic control freak nut about it.

Keep us updated when you set your eggs in the bator. I'd love to know how things turn out....and of course see PICTURES!!
