First time with a broody- hatch day is here-not sure what to do?!!??

I love looking at the photos of all the broodies with their babies. This morning as I was watching Onyx with her little ones following around her, I marveled at how wonderful nature is - the mothering instinct in a hen - how she protects them - how they automatically run and wiggle their way under her when they are scared or want to rest. She didn't have to read a book on how to brood those eggs or how to mother the chicks. It's all instinct. I love it. Yesterday one of the other hens was pecking at the shavings around the babies, and one of the babies got right under her - and she pecked at it. The baby squeaked, and Onyx let that hen know immediately to leave her baby alone. Then Onyx will start scratching around in the shavings, one of the babies will get under her feet, and she'll send it flying along with the shavings. And the baby just picks itself up and carries on. I could literally watch them for hours.

sumi, your chicken looks a lot like mine, what breed is she? The babies are adorable!
She's a cross between a something and another something

We have quite a selection of "somethings" here. My main breeding roo is a RIR X with something. That's all we know. I bought chickens from a shady breeder who advertised RIR's, but we got such a mix, heaven knows what they all are. Makes for some cute chicks, though!

Talking of which... chickenreferee, baby pics? I want to see the little boogers that caused all this drama.

This is the best I can do for now. I'm gonna have me a little 'family photo shoot' later today. But at least all 7 'kids' are out in this picture (some a bit blurry though). Ida is preening, bless her heart. A few of the chicks are enamored with her comb and eyes. She is gonna have her hands full!

They are beautiful! Love the colours... Well done, Ida!

Princess and her two little babies...
I held the rest of the eggs to my ear and only one was making any noise at all....

I plucked her out of the nest and the babies tumbled out after her. Boy was she thirsty and hungry.
Photos as promised:

Her Babies are White Wyandotte(roo)\Red Sex-link(hens)
I put her back on the nest and crossed my fingers...
If you notice Princess has a bit of a twist to her beak, not a good genetics to pass to babies....
