So this is my first go around with chickens, and I've never experienced a broody hen before. One of my gold laced wyandottes has been kind of mean and camping out in the nest box for a long time. Not all the time, but seems like it has been getting worse. She has also been making weird trilling noises at me. Lastly, she's been rolling everyone else's eggs out of the favorite nest box that everyone else likes to use. Is this typical broody behavior? Thanks for any replies!

Sounds like it to me. She may not be full blown broody yet. If she is, she won't leave the box except to eat, drink, and poop. The trilling sound is also an indicator. Now is the time to decide whether to let her hatch or not, and come up with a plan for what you decide to do with her.

I have never had a broody roll eggs out of the nest box. Usually they collect every egg they can. You'll know she's broody when she's in the nest box for at least a few days and nights, getting up only to eat, drink, poop and take care of whatever other business she has to do. She'll flatten down on the nest, growl at you when you come near and try to amputate your hand if you reach under her.

I know, right? It's weird that she would roll them out of the nesting box, but the last couple of days when I go to collect eggs, there's 5 other eggs down under the roosts and there she is sitting there in the nest box staring me down.

Good news is that she did lay an egg, and has vacated the nesting box. I wonder if it's some other underlying problem....I've never heard of anything like this. I wonder if she's having trouble laying or something.

That would make more sense to me. If she's not in that nest box day and night, she's not broody.
