First time with chickens - home from the feed store today!

:welcome :frow For more space I have used melon boxes. I put plastic down in the bottom and shavings over the plastic. Worked very well.

How many chicks can you raise at a time in these big boxes? And how sturdy are they? I'm looking for outdoor brooders which if using these would need to put a roof over. But I'm not sure how strong they are? Would rain ruin them?

They are quite sturdy cardboard boxes. If you have been in a grocery store you have probably seen them full of melons. They aren't waterproof. I would take them out during the day by placing them on an old sheet and dragging them outside. You can put quite a few chicks in them but they are only temporary brooders. I usually get mine from our local Walmart. I cut a hole in one side and put a temporary small pen for them to go out in. I put the netting over the top because one time I had them out and my husband was standing right next to the chicks cutting some wood on his saw and a hawk came down and snatched a chick. It happened so fast he didn't have time to react.

I also converted a shed into a chick/grow-out coop.
