First time with rhubarb

Oh how I love rhubarb...

However I have had a hard time finding it here. I just found a farm stand that has it for $2/lb. Guess where I'm going tomorrow... Time to can some rhubarb and make a rhubarb custard pie for Mother's Day!

I was so excited when we bought this house, I thought I saw rhubarb at the edge of the woods. Turns out it's burdock. It looks a lot like rhubarb, but if you snap the stem, it's hollow. Burdock is a useless, hard-to-get-rid-of weed and it still makes me sad when I see it because it's not rhubarb ;)

I saw crowns for sale at Walmart last year. Now that I have a place to put it, I can't find any. No one on Craigslist/Freecycle with plants either.

You can do this with leftover jam too!

Do you want to share your rhubarb custard recipe? Sounds yummy! I just pulled up all my rhubarb because my 12 week old chicks were feasting on the leaves and I thought it would kill them! Now I'm not sure? I gave the big thing to my Dad tho, he has this great big green thumb, maybe I can get some back from him, all trimmed up and pretty! He was stunned when he saw the battered leaves and said he hoped the chickens survived eating all the leaves. Now I see all these yummy recipes and I want it back. lol Oh, well, the chickens werent gonna let it grow anyway :)

Ours are blooming this year, so I don't harvest much from them. I enjoy the flowers, so I don't remove them. Last year was our amazing year. They do love cool, wet springs. I once saw some old pictures from Homer, Alaska, once upon a time the rhubarb capital of North America when Americans ate that much. The stalks were towering over the men's heads. Cool weather, long days. Perfect.

And I like my pie straight up! No apple to get in the way of the super-tart rhubarb flavor. A few raspberries or Pacific blackberries, just a few, are good, too, but just for a change of pace after I've eaten too many pies and put sauce on everything.

I begged for rhubarb 2 years ago offering to dig up and split roots, and never got an offer. I bought 2 plants at the nursery at $7.00 each and yesterday harvested the first time.

if anyone has rhubarb crows that they are willing to mail me, i will send strawberry plant starters. i'd like 4-6 to start.
anyone?
