(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes, my wife and I plan on picking some up this weekend along with a coop! We have been wanting to do this for years and since the COVID outbreak, we have more time at home to do so!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? None, but hoping to get 6 this weekend!

(3) What breeds do you have? Not sure, Brahmas for sure!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Just like the idea of fresh eggs and raising birds.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Fishing, boating, hiking to name a few.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My wife and I have a 16 year old Bichon!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I found it while looking for chicken coops online. Seems like a great community and lots of good information!

Hi and welcome to BYC. Hope you stop by the Michigan thread to say Hi

Since you say you are picking up a coop, do you mean a prefab from a farm supply store? It would be a good idea to check the size before getting birds. While chicks are quite small when you first get them, they need quite a bit of space once grown - generally around 4 square feet of coop space per bird, plus around 10 sq feet of run space. A small coop like that might be Ok for starting, but you may need something quite larger once your birds mature, around 4-5 months from now.

Yes, I'm referring to a prefab. I have an old horse barn in my back yard I have considered turning into a coop. It would be more than enough room for 6 chickens, but would need some fixing up first. I figure I could work on that while they grow. I know the prefab ones aren't the best, but figured it would work out in the beginning and I could grow from there. Thanks for the suggestion! Anymore are appreciated!
