Hey guys! Just got baby chicks about a week ago!!! This is my first time! I am looking for some good advice! The winters here where I live can get to -50 with the wind. I ordered a brown egg laying assortment and it didn't come with a list of breeds or anything like that so i need some help identify my chickens!

Grant nice to meet you. Glad you joined the BYC flock. The Learning Center is a fountain of knowledge. It has answers to questions you don't even have yet. If you check out the Coops section if will give you many ideas.

Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird inside the coop (not including nest boxes and roosts and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor coop.

Welcome to BYC, Grant. Glad you decided join our flock. Most brown egg layers are usually pretty cold hardy. You can post pics of them on our What Breed or Gender is This? section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this when they are about 5-6 weeks old and let our experts there identify the breeds for you. Be sure that your coop is draft free, dry, and well ventilated to prevent moisture from building up in it. Feathers are wonderful insulators and moisture is much more danger than cold is. BYC has some good articles on coop ventilation and keeping your coop warm in winter at our Housing Your Chickens section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/housing-and-feeding-your-chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.

Do you think I could do the breed thing now? Just to see what the experts think my babies are?
