Oooh! May I join? I'm a few days ahead of some, but there doesn't seem to be a hatch-a-long for that entire week.

we had wobbly air-cells, but only 2 that the aircell would go end-to-end on, so I'm hopeful about this hatch. We plugged the turner in lash night after resting them for 3-5 days, so hopefully those cells are firmly in place now!

This is our second hatch. The 1st one we hatched 2 of 27, and only had 7 make it to lockdown. Upon eggtopsy, it looks like our humidity may have been a little low, but we have an adorable mottled houdan and splash marans running around the brooder!

So we candled all the eggs just now. It's only been 3 days, but some look like they are 'cooking' and almost all look like they are in good shape. They all have brown, blue or green shells, so it's hard to see details in most of them. A few we saw veins, and a couple we could see the heart.

2 of the eggs have stretch marks. Not cracks, but weak points. Is it worth letting these stay or should we just take them out before they die and get icky?

Can I join...I took almost a year off hatching and was just growing my silkies out...I took some to my very first show and my splash got BV 1st, and I had a 2nd and a 3 rd place in AOV...

Anyway...

Eggs set: Thursday 9/13
Incubator: Hovabator 1588 with turner
Eggs: 15 bantam Cochin (mottled and Mille fluer) and 1 paint silkie of my own as a test egg from my breeding pen

Also have 3 bantam Cochin and one paint showgirl egg under a broody silkie.

I candled some tonight and a lot look clear ( these are all from a top breeder so i hope theyre not duds) but some are developing with veins already. Hopefully some more will start but they should have by now if they are going to. My very first silkie egg from my own pens is veining up nicely...it will be exciting...

Welcome aboard everybody! I can't wait to hear how things are coming along

Greetings everyone. I've been lurking for a couple of days. This is my first hatch and I am learning the whole way. First i have 50 brown egg layer assorted chickens in the barn yard and borrowed a neighbors still air incubator with an auto turner. The neighbor has hatched out a few batches but mostly just lets her broody chickens do the work. So I am left to search the Internet and this lovely site for information and instructions. Saw this forum a couple days ago and it got left up on my desktop, now I'm ready to join.

My question to you is: Should I candle my eggs? Won't opening the incubator flux the temperature and humidity? With my square Styrofoam incubator the 'lid' is the whole top of the incubator. I have a sponge off to one side for water/humidity. Back to candling, I am not sure I will even see anything with my dark shelled eggs. (Not super dark shells but definitely brown eggs)

Eggs set: Saturday 9/15
Incubator: still-air Styrofoam incubator w/auto turner
Eggs: 37 brown egg layers

Thanks for your help. I look forward to our hatches :)

Welcome!!
BYC is a great resource for chicken-keepers new and old. I've been raising chickens since I was in grade school, but this is my first time hatching my own. It's helpful to be able to ask questions and compare notes with so many people.

We decided to candle our eggs early just because we didn't have a baseline to compare. The incubator isn't open too long and gets right back to temp & humidity levels when we're done. Even with darker shells we were able to see signs of development, so it was worth it.
