Hello all! I'm very excited about my new brood of (hopefully) female chickens. I got 5 chicks from Meyer's Hatchery. All of em look great except my speckled sussex. :( She's half the size and much sleepier. I dropper fed her for a bit, she is now eating from a bowl only when I offer it and kinda starting to drink on her own. Any hope for this gal? I vowed that she will not pass by my lack of trying.

Thanks a ton! I'm loving it all so far.

She may have had a rougher hatching experience than the others, been stomped upon in the shipping container, or even born a little later than the bigger chicks. Sounds like she is coming around just fine. Please be patient with her. Have you noticed if the other chicks are giving her a hard time. Chicks/chickens love finding one to bully.
They may prevent her from eating with them , peck her, feather pluck or worse. Please supervise the activity until you are convinced she isn't a victim.

Agreed, I was going to comment, but it looks like drumstick has got it all exactly. :P Hope everything goes alright with the little one.

Sounds like you are doing all of the right things with her. Hoping it's a girl for you too!

Welcome to BYC, Erin. Glad you decided to join our flock. Hopefully your Speckled Sussex will make it. Sussex are a great breed; cold hardy, friendly and gentle (our children made lap pets of ours), and good layers of large, brown eggs. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Speckled Sussex.
