First timer

Hi I'm one week into raising chicks. I have them in a horse water tank inside my house. The tank is only 10.5" deep. This am I saw one of them up on the edge. It's to cold to put them out in the coop yet. I suppose I need to devise a cover of some sort? I'm not a handy man so simple ideas.

If their coop is built and you have electricity, you can put them out there. I brood the majority of my chicks outdoors using a heating pad cave AKA "mama heating pad". Without electricity the alternative is https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...lamp-and-possibly-no-supplemental-heat-at-all

! Pleased you joined us - new chickens are an exciting time. Cardboard with hole lunched in it so heat from the lamp can escape is one option. You could also "wrap" cardboard uo its edge up the sides of the tank to increase it's death. Another better choice is some sort of wire or mesh. I use four one by twos nailed together that make a rectangle shape and then staple chicken wire to it and place it on top of the box. It works great for me.

I've used an old screened window to cover the brooder before. It was free (found it in our shed) and because of the wood frame, it was enough weight to keep it in place but still easy for me to lift off. Plus, I could see through it and it allowed for plenty of ventilation.

wire tops are best so there is some free exchange of air, and if you are using a brooder lamp it will help prevent it from falling on top of the chicks.
