Hi everyone! I'm a new chicken mom living in Alaska. I have 8 chicks. Six of them are 7 weeks old and two are 5 weeks old. They were hatched from a friend, so I'm still figuring out which breeds I have. I believe I have 1 Barred Rock, 3 Easter Eggers (1 brown, 2 black), and 1 Leghorn (all white). I'm not 100% sure if the other 3 are Leghorn or something else (white with a few black patches). I'll have to get pictures added. It's hard to get good pictures of them! I might be wrong about the breeds, so I hope to learn more!

They are currently living in my garage until their coop is finished (almost done!). I have the heatlamp on at night and sometimes during the day, because my garage is much cooler than it is outside.

I have a couple questions.

1) Does my Barred Rock look like a cockerel? I'm thinking so. I've noticed some alpha attitude. It might be hard to see features from the picture though.

2) when do I switch from chick starter feed to regular feed?

Thanks for this great forum full of info!! I'm excited to join!

Hi and welcome to BYC. Re: feed - I used to change from starter to growers feed after 6 weeks or so (I’m sure other members do things differently). Here are some helpful links:

Best wishes

Welcome to BYC!
Your barred rock is a cockrel. Are his legs and feet yellow or pink? If pink he is probably a cuckoo marans.
The white with black spots may be a California white or another white hybrid.
They may be backyard mixed (my favorites) depending on where your friend got the eggs.
Whatever they are, they are beautiful. Congratulations on your new flock!
