Hi! I'm actually an "almost-first-timer" - my first four chicks will arrive mid-June. I'm so excited about them I can hardly stand it! I ordered a Golden Laced Wyandotte, a Rhode Island Red, an "Easter Egger" and a Speckled Sussex from My Pet Chicken, all pullets. I live in a suburban area with large lots, but we are not actually zoned for chickens. My neighbors on both sides are ok with it, so I am hoping we don't have any issues with that! I have read a ton of books on raising chickens, so I hope I have at least a realistic view of what it will be like, but I am sure I will have lots of questions! I read about this site in several of the books, and I'm already spending way too much time here!

I'm a stay-home mom with three kids, aged 4, 5 and 6, who are all very excited about the hens. We have a count-down-to-the-chicks calendar on our kitchen wall that they mark off each day. Our only other pet is a Dwarf African Frog. I'm happy to be here on BYC! -Laura

Welcome to BYC, glad you decided to join us. Good luck with your birds. IMO you will find chickens to be much more entertaining than frogs.
