I want to raise some chickens for the eggs. But I know nothing, my aunt helps me as much as she can. But some things she forgets about it.

info on:

When to order for spring eggs?

I know I will have to keep them warm threw winter,
but I need info on temperature and such.

Someone please help me.

Thanks in advance,

Cindy York

If you want eggs in spring, you better get chicks soon. Pullets usually start laying between 18 to 25-weeks old depending on breed. Egyptian Fayoumis, Leghorns and production hybrids are good breeds for early maturation. I've had Marans that didn't start laying until over 30-weeks old.

You need to keep chicks in a brooder until they are feathered in enough to keep themselves comfortable (I usually count on 5 weeks give or take a few days/week, depending on breed and time of year). After that, they really shouldn't need supplemental heat--especially in Texas. I'm in Montana and I don't give my chickens any heat in winter.

You could get yourself any of the general chicken raising books, they will help with your questions a great deal.
