It's been a hard day. My morning started off digging a little grave for the poor baby.

Can someone please tell me why she passed away? She was dead under my broody when I found her.

It's not a great picture but her (umbilical cord?) had a little yellow on it, and there was blood on her nose. There was blood in the nest too. I'm heartbroken. It's my first pet that I solely owned to die, even if I didn't get to know her.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but am I right in saying that one of those feet isn't finished developing, even? I think your broody accidentally crushed her or let her out too early... blood should never be around a hatched chick, as they suck all of that in in the final stages of development. Was it Day 21 for this chick?

I can't be sure. I have eggs hatching over the course of three days. I know now that it shouldn't be staggered, but it's my first time. One chick was due to hatch today, a few tomorrow, and a few the day after.

I see-- it could have been a fatal birth defect, too. It happens more often than we like to talk about-- usually days 7 and 20 are thresholds for when a chick will die due to development issues. If she failed to take her first breath of air correctly, she would have died in the egg. But she was out of the egg completely when you found her?

Yes. Thank you very much for your time and help by the way. I really appreciate it.

I believe I figured it out. My heart is heavy, it was my fault. And to make it worse another chick died.

I didn't separate our broody from the rest of the flock because the only way I could was with this dog crate that took up 60% of the coop. I think some of the hens crushed the eggs trying to lay an egg with the broody. This happened in the past with two eggs, luckily when they were still just yolk.

I moved the dog crate in. I feel so bad.
