Did some research before bringing some home. Let me tell you, I believe made a difference in how soon chicks calmed down and got settled.
Kids and wife have already named them all. Apparently its a state law in Ohio to get 6 chickens? Which I find strange. Real problems in the world, and you have to get 6 chickens at the time?? Haha, whatever.
Had our smaller brooders habitat ready to go. We will definitely be getting/making a bigger one next weekend.
Some things I find fascinating. Apparently the hole of food next to the one they're eating at right now is better. And I often wondered how poop got into the feeder. I know now, they walk in circles around the feeder like its their job.
When we first got home and put them in the brooder, I "showed" them were the water was, beak dip and all. After watching them after a while I had doubts they remembered about the water. So after about 3 hours I re-taught them about the water. The first was super excited, by the time we did the second the rest of the flock was like "what's going on over here?" And the rest hopped up and took drinks. Super good feelings about that.
Smooth sailing from then on.
We got them from rural king, which I'm guessing has lights (at least heating) on all the time. So they have no sense of day night. But they will now, with the heating pad setup I did.
Two brown leghorns. Which are suppose to end up weighing the least, right now are the heaviest at 1.7 oz. An isa brown and barred rock, both at 1.4 oz. And 2 silver laced wyandottes, 1.1 and 1.4 oz.
