Fishy smell

Hi,

Sorry to jump the gun and not introduce myself, I will be doing so asap... Until now I've been enjoying lurking. My partner and I are currently raising 6 little chicks, one of which I'm almost sure is a rooster, but I digress from topic...
They are very happy and very healthy. 6 weeks old now and looking like little mini chickens which is so cute.
Recently though I've noticed a very distinct ocean smell in their pen. Currently they are in the middle of being inside/outside chickens and are spending a lot of time outdoors in a different pen, I don't notice the smell out there.
It's not a foul smell exactly but it is slightly strange and off putting.The indoor cage is cleaned at least once a day, usually more and doesn't smell after cleaning. Also the fishy smell is back as soon as the chickens are placed back in the pen, however they themselves don't smell.
I've read about fishy eggs being linked to food and after some investigation have noticed that said smell is strongest in their food and water dish, however the smell doesn't linger after cleaning, nor does their crumble smell ocean-y whilst in the bag.
Their feed is also a quality organic crumble and I can't see canola listed anywhere on the ingredients.
Has anyone else had this issue? Think it's any cause for concern?

If you give us the name of the feed, others may have had experience with that brand and can tell you if they noticed a fishy odor related to it.

I had bought what I thought was chick starter two months ago, and it turned out to be a dried fish supplement. Others who were familiar with the brand enlightened me to what I was ignorant about.

That is what we are feeding our chicks, they are also foraging on a small patch of lawn and I think eating a little of the sand they have to dust bath in.
Their water dish also has a small amount of apple cider vinegar added every other change and they've had a boiled mashed egg or two with s little ground shell... Which seemed sort of wrong too me but was highly recommended by the chicken chick.

There indoor bedding is several layers of newspaper covered by about an inch of pine shavings.

I have to say too, the ocean smell comes and goes. It was there when they first returned to the cage, however when I changed the bedding before bedding them down for the night It didn't return, however food and water dishes were both still present in the cage.
