"Fixed" dog is in heat!

Update: Vet confirmed she is in heat. No charge. Told me that it might be an imbilical cord scar? And come back a couple weeks after she's finished the heat. Yay. Quote is just under two hundred to get her done as she just had bloodwork last month. (36 lbs.)

The difficulty of telling if a female dog has been spayed has caused many animal shelters to tattoo an "X" or other mark on their bellies when they spay them at the shelter. I found this out when I adopted a female dog last year and she came with an orange "X" on her tummy. I was curious and called the shelter, they explained that it just reduces the expense of unnecessary procedures.

Heat lasts roughly three weeks. She is attractive to males the whole time but she is receptive to males only during the second week. Chlorophyl tablets will help a lot with the odor. You can get them at the health food store and they are not very expensive. I don't know what the dosage is but properly used they prettty well eliminate the odor. She can be spayed even though she is in heat. It is a little more difficult but it can be done. Spaying won't shorten the heat though.

An infection can cause a lot of the same symptoms as heat. My puppy got a foxtail up there and the male dogs went nuts.

Call around on the spaying. $200 sounds awfully expensive for a simple spay. Until recently I lived in California where things tend to be more expensive than elsewhere and I didn't pay anywhere near that for spays unless we are talking about a Saint Bernard or something.
