Well I realized the other day that my cat has fleas, so, horrified, I went looking for my usual "spot on" flea control product. (Frontline or advantage) Darn, there was no more in the box. I ran out last summer and forgot to get more! Usually I get all I want from my friend, but she lives far away now and I won't be seeing her for a while.
I decided to try some food grade D.E. powder I've been sprinkling around on the grass and chicken run to control flies. WOW I am sooo pleased- it worked like a charm! No fleas at all on kitty when I checked him 24 hours later. And the powder is so fine, it really gets down in to his fur and stays there. I sprinkled it on using a small pasta strainer and was liberal with the application. Of course we did this outdoors. I love that it won't harm him and isn't really a chemical, so I don't have to worry about kitty sleeping in my daughter's bed.
Just though I'd pass on this tip, in case anyone else out there hadn't heard of using food grade Diatomaceous Earth for flea control on cats and dogs.

I've heard of this and considered it. I also hate putting pesticides on my cats, but how in the world do you get the cat to stay down long enough to apply? My older cat might actually rip me apart in the process. He doesn't take crap from anyone! Please tell me how you did this without getting scratched.

Hmmm, well he held still because he's a silly guy and he liked the attention of "petting" and "patting" the D.E. in to his fur. I have found cats are less nuts if you let them keep their paws on the ground while you doctor them, and sortof sit on them. I actually put a ton of DE in there and then let him walk around outside and shake the excess out. He looked like a Ghost kitty afterwards; the kids laughed at him. It has NO smell at all, so he had seemingly no idea what was happening!

DE doesnt really work. IMO...
I'd only try it as a slight preventive...not to treat a problem.
