Flea prevention?

Quote:
Have you tried Comfortis? It is a pill you give and it kills all fleas within 4 hours. The dog is then protected for 30 days against fleas. Just get several doses of it and call it good! (But only give one pill every 30 days).

I didn't read the whole thread but I'll second the Borax. It is super cheap and I never see a single flea after I've treated the house.
FWIW I leave it on my carpet all the time, I vacuum regularly and then re-apply it. It's wonderful at eliminating odors and stains.

Frontline costs around $35.00 per month here AND I have spoken to more than one vet who has confirmed that fleas are losing their susceptibility to both Advantix AND Frontline.

Hence, the reason I have gone to Comfortis.

Oh...if you're REALLY smart, purchase the pill that is the "next" level. Say you have a 10 lbs. dog. Purchase the 20 lbs. pill and cut it in half and give one half for the first 30 days and the second half for your second 30 days. Which would mean the pill is only $7.00.

(Again...from a vet.)

You can get borax powder at the dollar store.
Also permethrin 10 is cheap and good. A 8 oz bottle makes about 30 gallons or so when mixed with water.

Has anyone used this here yet?
I am seriously considering it.

I did look some things up and both Bayer Tree and Shrub and Advantage/Advantix are made by Bayer and all contain the same active ingredient: Imidacloprid
K9 Advantix also contains permethrin which Advantage for cats does not contain. I wonder if the Premethrin is the ingredient that some people were saying was not safe for cats since it's clearly not in it any longer.

It does not contain the same active ingredient as Frontline which contains Fipronil.

Glassman, the Tree and Shrub Insect Control, it's the concentrated bottle right, not the premix?
And you said 2 CC for a small dog, and 4 CC for a large. Reapply monthly like a regular topical yes?
What about a 5 pound Chihuahua? Would that count as small or ex-small?
Have you and your family used this on cats?

runs off to do more research

going to use this as a dumping ground for my research on this...
The purpose?
To compare the active ingredient in common flea and tick products on todays market to the active ingredient in Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control in order to determine if it can be used as a topical flea product on pets safely.

Bayer Tree & Shrub Insect Control Concentrate

Active Ingredients:
Imidacloprid: 1.47%

Bayer Advantage For Dogs:
Ingredients:

Imidacloprid; 1-[(6-Chloro-3-pyridinyl) methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine 9.1% Inert Ingredients: 90.9%

The active ingredient of Advantage is imidacloprid, which affects the insect's nervous system, effectively eliminating 98-100% of the irritating parasites.

Advantage
00ae.png
for dogs contains imidacloprid, the fastest flea preventive, which works within 12 hours
* Long-lasting over-the-counter formula keeps working for up to 4 weeks
* Easy-squeeze tube makes application a breeze

K9 Advantix:
Imidacloprid; 1-[6-Chloro-3-pyrindinyl) methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine 8.8% Permethrin 44.0%
Other ingredients 47.2%

If applied to a cat, or ingested by a cat which actively grooms a recently treated dog, this product may have serious harmful effects. If this occurs contact your veterinarian immediately.

What makes Advantix Special?
Synergistic Effect
The two active ingredients imidacloprid and permethrin are often used alone as effective treatments against parasites. However, the combination Advantix formula works synergistically to provide more protection than each of these ingredients alone. Together, they complement one another to enhance their effectiveness and provide complete protection against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

The active ingredient imidacloprid is an EPA approved topical insecticide that kills adult fleas by disrupting their nervous system. Fleas in their larval stages are also killed when they come in contact with the treated pet or their immediate surroundings. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethrin compound commonly used to kill flying insects, fleas, and ticks. EPA approved for use in dogs, permethrin affects the nervous system of parasites, causing repetitive nerve firings that eventually paralyze and kill them. Permethrin is longer lasting and more stable than natural pyrethrin. For this reason, it is commonly found in repellents, premise sprays, and in products intended for slower, but sustained action. K9 Advantix takes advantage of these properties to offer superior protection against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

Advantage For Cats:
(Keep in mind, that the above K9 Advantix contains Permethrin which they say above can be harmful to cats)

The active ingredient of Advantage is imidacloprid, which affects the insect's nervous system, effectively controlling 98-100% of the irritating parasites.

Imidacloprid; 1-[(6-Chloro-3-pyridinyl) methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine
9.1%

Inert Ingredients:
90.9%

(***Contains NO Permethrin***)

Frontline Plus For DOGS:

Long-lasting, fast acting flea and tick control. Frontline Plus contains fipronil, a flea adulticide. Fipronil works by affecting the parasite's (the flea's or tick's) nervous system causing paralysis and death of the parasite. Fipronil spreads over the pet's body with the body oils killing 98-100% of the fleas or ticks within 24-48 hours, and controlling transmission of tick-borne disease, such as Lyme disease.

Fipronil collects in the oils of the skin and hair follicles and then is released over time (up to 1 month) from the hair follicles onto the skin and hair.

Active Ingredients:

Fipronil 9.8%
(S) Methoprene 8.8%
Inert Ingredients 81.4%

Frontline For CATS:

Computer acting up... More later

Currently it looks promising as both Advantage and Tree and Shrub are both made by Bayer, both containing the same active ingredient, while Frontline products contail Fipronil which is not contained in Tree and Shrub.

My current concerns are that in the Tree and Shrub the active ingredient is only 1.47% while the same active ingredient in one dose of Advantage is 9.1%.
I supose this is due to the fact that the dose of Advantage is very small, in comparison to a full quart bottle of the tree and shrub?
