Fleas and Ticks

About 5 years ago I had a terrible flea problem. I tried all the shampoos and sprays they had on the market. I was giving the poor dogs a bath at least twice a week. Then I discovered Frontline. It was great. No fleas at all until last year. The Frontline wasn't working. I had to switch to Advantage. It worked. So far we are still flea free

I also have always used frontline on all my pets. It works! When you have a flea problem you can't just treat the animal as you know. I know people do not like to use chemicals (believe me I'm one of them), but when you have a flea outbreak you need to call an exterminator. They need to powerspray your lawn and the outside of your house. They will need to spray the inside also. Fleas will bread and hatch in all your furniture and mattresses. They get everywhere!!! Have the exterminator "hit" your house a few times to catch all the cycles of the fleas. To control it afterward, keep treating your pets with preventative and my husband would put a granual down in the yard and water it in. I will have to ask him the name of it later, it is from Wal-mart, in a red bag, with pictures of flease and ticks on it. It is not very expensive and works GREAT to keep them away.

I use the Frontline squirts that you put between the shoulder blades on my dog and cat. No one likes to use chemicals, but I have never found anything that works better.
I live in a cold area, so I don't need to apply it year 'round. Generally in April or May I start, and then stop in October unless it is an unusually warm November. As long as I start early enough in the spring, I never have a house infestation, so I don't need to do any other spraying.
I have had a couple of ticks on my dogs despite the Frontline, but none of them had dug in yet.

I lived in NC and fought fleas on all fronts with little success. Sometimes it seemed like what I was doing was doing more to poison us and HELPING them! Then they introduced ADVANTAGE and everything changed.

We moved back to PA and the fleas here are much more manageable, but at the first sign, I treat the dogs with ADVANTAGE and NO FLEAS.

The garlic is completely safe and cheap! I just get the powder form which usually runs about 50 cents a bottle and sprinkle it on the dog food. Hope that helps!

Thanks gumpsgirl, I gave them all some yogurt with D.E. in it and just finished clipping one dog. They eat dry Science Diet dog food so I think I will sprinkle the garlic on some more yogurt. LOL
We go through this every spring and it does not get out of hand such as in mattresses and etc. I vacuum my house every single day with The Dyson Animal vacuum. I also steam clean my carpets several times a year. But the fleas at the beginning of spring are just terrible. I will give Frontline another try...well, maybe...as it is a lot of money to be throwing away when it hasn't been working. Bio-Spot doesn't faze anything, even the people at MFA don't recommend it and some of the workers there raise dogs. I really appreciate all the help and ideas guys. Thanks a bunch

I've read online somewhere that garlic is completely safe for dogs/cats, so I will be using garlic powder on Autumn's (my cat) food so she'll transfer this to her kittens. After I see how this does, I'll let everyone know. I've heard of good results.
