I have one hen that lays an egg with a little blood red fleshy spot in it. Hers are like this everyday. It is erally quite small, maybe 1/4 in. around, circular and is in the egg white area close to the yolk. Anyone know what it is? Is this normal. She had done it since she has layed, every egg the same. She is a Buckeye, is this normal? I am selling eggs and I am concerned the customers will worry. My chickens have been wormed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Some of mine lay eggs with an occasional meat spot. I wouldn't use those birds to breed, just because it is less desirable. Also, when you worm your chickens, make sure to read the package. It should give you guidelines of when the eggs will be safe to consume again.

There is nothing wrong with meat spots, go ahead and eat em and even breed the hens that lay them. The only difference in them vs store bought, perfect eggs is that those are candled and the ones with blood spots tossed out before they hit the markets.

I am so happy to hear that. Thanks all, I was a little uneasy about it. Now, any suggestions about how to handle customers if they ask or comment on it? Thanks again.

Tell them that it is a natural part of the hen's cycle, that she will often drop old flesh into the egg. It is nothing to worry about, nothing gross, happens all the time - The only reason they don't see it in the stores is because all the eggs from the stores are pre-candled (lit up with a light) to discard any unusual eggs. That means any odd weights, shapes, sizes, amount of yolks, spots in the yolks, etc.

I have the same thing and I can't eat them. It really grosses me out. I have a lot of young hens just trying to get their laying groove on and I've wasting a lot of eggs. Does anyone know how long this goes on?

Some hens are more prone to them, but generally a chicken gets all her laying kinks worked out after a month or so.
