Sand didn't help? Shoot. I'm having that same issue and a friend told me to use sand and I wouldn't have fly issues. I hope someone has a solution!

I hang some fly tapes/strips to catch some, and then spray the areas that they are concentrating with Spinosad which is an organic product.. http://www.amazon.com/Monterey-LG61...=UTF8&qid=1372007588&sr=8-1&keywords=spinosad

Also work for mites and lice.

I also have one of these in the coop, http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/country-vetreg;-flying-insect--odor-control-kit

I had a dispenser and just bought the insect spray.

I did this for the gnats that were biting the flock in the evenings.

I put up a poop hammock under their roost and filled it with Sweet PDZ. I scoop it out maybe every 3 days....no odor in the coop and no flies but they "free range" the yard all day. Maybe mix in some granulated PDZ with your sand. It's amazing stuff....sucks the moisture right out of the poop!

I use food grade diatomacious earth. I got it in a white bag at Tractor Supply Company for around 12 or 13 dollars. It is a light powdery substance. I just spread it around inside and outside the coop and run. It also can be placed on the chickens to control mites. After a few days you will see a significant decrease in flies.

Justgot our first chickens a few months ago and right now they are still in our garage until hubby gets the Taj Ma Coop done. we had horrible flies last year because we were out in the country and no chickens. strategically placed fly traps are wonderful although they stink to the high heavens. but they really work! My friend calls them two traps. Also I mix diatomaceous earth in with pine shavings in there runs I am going to switch over to sand and diatomaceous earth. I also add some baking soda I read somewhere that that helps with the odor. Eco Smart Organic bug killer around outside of runs. that is it! I am amazed at how well is working so far.
