Flies, Flies, Flies.... Oh man help me PLEASE!!!!

I just put out new vanilla trees. In less than 30 minutes the flies had left. I have a covered open air pen and they work great! Also I am in FL too. I cannot believe those silly trees work!

Oh no! If my chickens hear that I should provide them with their own vanilla scented hangy thing, I will NEVER hear the end of it. They have already been in the pool. Next a pedicure, massage...

Question on the vanilla tree thingies.....Ok, seems they don't last all that long in a closed in space, car, closet...etc....so about how long do they last hanging outdoors? Seems that could end up getting expensive?? I am curious, as DE is not avail locally and am toying with the idea of buying it off ebay, but if these trees work....and seem to last for everyone else....I am thinkin' I would love to open my coop and smell vanilla scented chicken poo!!!!! Better than the pic I get in my head...like the fish covered in floral air freshener commerical!!!!

Do they work for mosquitoes and fruit flies as well?
What about other vanilla flavoured air fresheners, such as Glade, Fabreze, or just plain artificial vanilla extract?

flies under brooder - wire floor - can hang Vanilla trees but will the hens eat this and be sick - they can now go under brooder, they have scratched and scratched making fly hazard BETTER but not gone....what to do...had the bottom of the brooder wired so no predators could get under but all is secure anyway... lime can be used also...just don't know if the lime will hurt chickens...what to do..what to do

Althought the "Xtra Strength" trees work the best, I have had decent luck INSIDE the barn/feed room with the automatic dispenser that has a vanilla scented refill in it. It keeps them out of there!!

I've heard other folks have had mixed results using actual vanilla extract. You would have to be sure to get one without sugar or corn syrup...and they can be hard to find.
