Get cheap vanilla scented air freshener's from Dollar store, and an Vanilla scent in a bottle from Auto Zone. As the vanilla wears off the air freshener's just a little spray and they will be like new. Definetly keeps the flies away!
I am SO GLAD I'm not the only one this happened to. My husband hung strips around the outside of the coop and when I went to peek through a crack between the wood to check on the girls the side of my face and hair got stuck on the dang thing (it was flapping around in the breeze). I just mosied into the house with it stuck on my face and told DH that they were on their roost for the night. When he looked up he almost fell out of his chair laughing.
I've been using DE, spot removing poop from the coop and run every day and still had flies. So...went with what people have been saying all over BYC, and bought some vanilla car fresheners. I hung one over my side door where the coop is located, one inside the coop by the run, one under the stairs by the coop where they like to go during the day for bugs (which also has DE spread around it), and one at the end of the run. Came inside to check my boys school work, went out, and there was a fly sitting on two of the fresheners

Oh... and Peanut Butter worked. tongue
OMG!!! This made me laugh so hard my kids came in to see what was so funny! I can just picture myself doing the same thing and it made me laugh!!
Tried the Vanilla trees and they work great. The whole backyard smells like I'm baking cookies and no flies. But, the scent wore off after about 10-14 days. Might try to re-spray them but my DH just found a pack of 24 trees online for only $5.00 so he got those pronto. Even with shipping it was a ton cheaper than buying at the auto-parts store.
Now to find something for the mosquitos and something that works on the whole yard rather than just the vicinity of a few vanilla trees.
