Flies???

What are fly predators? Besides the obvious....

I mean, name a few...

Actually I thought my chickens would eat flies or ants, but no such luck.

What about putting down lime??

I'm not suggesting it I was just wanting to post about this myself. Cause my neighbors are wanting to spray heir yards for flies because of my chickens and I don't want chemicals around my yard.

That's the best, the big stinky jars. Also the caps that go on milk containers or the hang up bags. Never had much luck with the sex attractant, so I use raw fish or canned fish, put in container, add water to cover, and sit in the sun, within a few days, you will see that the flies like the stinky the better. Keep the water level a hair above the thousands of dead flies in the container. Just think, a full container can be 10k. flies-that aren't producing offspring, etc. I have 2 jars going and I'm adding a third.

Would I just use a mason jar? Or cu down a 2 liter bottle. HHMMM I'd have to put where the dogs couldn't get at it.
I'm thinking mayonaise? Tuna?

here is the site for fly predators, since I live in town and the chickens are close to the house I really didn't like using the traps, stench!!!!!! I am going to try these.
http://www.spalding-labs.com/ The price isn't too bad and if it works it will be money well spent since I will probably be spending even more time out in the back yard since dog shows will be few and far between:(

I just bought me one! Gotta do something with these biting flies!

Wonder if these would work on "greenhead" along the marshes in Jersey?! Those things take a chunk of meat out of you. Thought my husband was gonna die the first time he got bit. City-boy, ya'll know how they are!

I get mine thru a horse or livestock website, like AmericanLivestocksupply.com.
I think they make lids for the mason jars. The milk containers, the plastic 2 quart or a gallon, and use the fly top that fits it. The descriptions tell you what they are for. You can hang them up to 4 feet off the ground. Once they are stinky, the dogs may not like them. You can try to make a wire thing around it so they can't get it on the ground.

LOL My dogs LOVE stinky.

We live in PHX and the heat is up and the fly's are the worst I've ever seen here, now that we have chickens. This is the first time I have not used fly predators thinking that the chickens would just eat them anyway. And I was not exactly sure how effective they were. I contacted Spalding Labs and they say to hang them high. I am ordering them again, I always double my order, got 2 horses , a goat and chickens, so do all of our neighbors, and the fly predators and fly's all do travel. Try to get everyone to get them, they are more effective in greater numbers.
Use them with DE and fly bags, hang the bags far away from everything and check the water levels often.
Hope it helps!
OBTW- they work on most every kind of fly!

Do Guineas eat flies? I'm thinking of getting some, but to help control the out-of-control ticks.
