Hello, hope you're all having a good day!

I have 5 eggs in my homemade incubator right now, and one of them started pipping this morning. But the other four, i'm not sure if they're alive. So we had a power outage a couple days ago, and it was in the middle of the night so i was asleep and didn't wake up to put anything over the incubator to keep the heat in, and by the time i woke up it had been around 80-85 degrees fahrenheit for at least an hour. I candled them the next morning and all of them had stopped moving, and they haven't moved since day 12 (i candled them everyday from day 12 to 15, and yes, i understand that that probably wasn't good to candled them that much but i was really worried). so today, day 20 (i think? i kinda lost track...) I tried the float test. I didn't float the one that had pipped and i checked carefully for pips on all the other. The 4 that hadn't moved all floated with the pointy end straight down, like, directly down not even slightly at an angle. Does this mean their dead?

(edit) they're coturnix quail eggs, so they normally hatch on day 18.

only time will tell .. generally i would say from the first pip it takes about 48 hours and sometimes more for them all to get out .. so just wait, i know its nerve racking :)

I'll tag some experts, @MGG @shawluvsbirds. I really hope the rest make it! Do you have something lined up to maybe get the lone guy a friend if the other down hatch? Single hatchlings aren't great, you want at least a pare. Maybe try to find something ahead of time just in case. You will want to buddy to be as young as possible, 1-3 days old is preferred.

Yeah i've heard they're super social and need a friend, but i'm not sure if we'll be able to get one because all the ones i've found for sale are over 7 days old. But we're going to try to get it a friend as soon as possible, and if I can't i'm going to be keeping it with me as much as possible so that it doesn't get lonely, and since I do online school and don't have many chores to do it shouldn't be a problem keeping him or her around me all the time. But I know i can't be a substitute for another quail, so we'll try to get it a friend.

I know that TSC should be getting chicks in soon, I wonder if this is a crazy idea, but if you got her a chick or two, if they would become friends and be okay to live with each other as adults. I'll let the experts make that call, but if there is a chance it will work, not a bad idea to give it a try. Probably better then raising her alone.

yeah i don't want it to get lonely by raising it alone, so i'm doing my best to find him or her a friend.
