So, I've had ducks, guinea fowl, quail, and now chickens. After some thinking I decided I wanted to add to my current flock of 14 chickens:D
I have one coop- my chicken coop- and a run area of 400 sq ft. All this adjoins onto a three sided run-in shed. Then, I also have another coop, but it's only 4 feet tall, but 48 square feet. It joins onto the run area with the chickens but there is also a seperated run area under the shed roof about 100 sq ft.
I did have ducks 2 years ago. I loved them, but they were so wet, and I found hauling water to the coop area (I'd have to put water in a cooler and side by side it down) was exhausting. They were mixed breed.
I then got 20 wyandotte chicks and 20 Cotournix quail chicks. Seperated of course;) They were both ADORABLE:love At 7 weeks a fox ate them though.
I then got 5 chickens who hatched out 9 chicks. With only 1 fatality I am loving my chickens, mixed breed. I hated the guineas.
I want something more though. My flock is mixed breed, so selling chicks is difficult. They are more for selling eggs to eat and for meat for our family.
I want a pure breed or high demand bird that is low to medium maintenence. They will be meant for selling fertile eggs, chicks, or meat. We don't have an incubator so a broody spirit is a must.
I have considered turkeys (I am interested but worried about their size and flying ability, and if they need to roost).
I have also thought about Muscovy ducks but the word "duck" makes me think back to my wet bedding and dirty water days. I loved the ducks but not their mess:p
Thought about quail as personally, I loved the little guys. Only issue is they usually aren't broody.
We can't get peacocks up here.
Any suggestions, guys?:bow

I've never had quail but I've had about just about every other bird can think of lol.. if you're wanting something Broody I would suggest any kind of orpington hens they are excellent layers and excellent mothers. Has for turkeys the Royal Palm is a great breed very broody but keep in mind only certain times of year will they lay it hatch. You can take turkey eggs quail eggs and put them underneath of Broody hen.

What is the market(what will sell) in your area?
I assume you won't be shipping anything?
Can you sell meat...check the regs.
Producing a lot without an incubator might be tricky.
I don't think quail or turkey are particularly great at brooding.

Quail eggs are way to small to be brooded by another species.
I also don't want more chickens I love my current ones.

There's a TON of mixed breed chickens in the area and some turkeys. Quail and pure breed turkeys are hard to find. Muscovies are also hard to get. My issue with quail is the lack of an incubator. I don't plan to ship anything.
