Flock dynamics

They are very pretty drakes. It is is a very beautiful area.
Thank you! We love it here.

It really only takes seconds for them to dirty water. One of my ducks had a prolapse last year. She was my tiniest duck, and she managed to turn a full tub of water brown with one poop. I mean like dark cloudy brown, can't see the bottom.
Wow. I hope I never have to experience that (the prolapse, although the one-poop-brown-water, too). I hope she was able to be treated.

We were able to treat it. I was worried for a bit with her, especially when she started laying again this year. She took like 6 months off, which was great. But she is doing well this year. I am treating another runner with a prolapse issue, which has made me question owning runners.

Here is a recent photo of her.

I have been to Canada once and it was really gorgeous. We visited Banff. Not sure if I could handle the cold, but it is beautiful.

That's good! I don't think for myself I'd get any runners. They look too much like bowling pins on legs for me (no offense to anyone!).

I've never been to Banff, but have seen photos. Truly gorgeous, any time of year.
The area I'm in is full of lakes and streams and wetlands. It's mostly cottage country, with about 75% of the population being seasonal, and of those the majority are only here on weekends.

This is my backyard in the Fall. :)

I thought the same way as you did. I couldn't see my self getting runners. They just looked a bit odd, and I really couldn't see myself getting them. I don't know when that changed. Maybe all the time on this site looking at people's adorable runners, but they are absolutely adorable and sweethearts. A lot of people like them because they look like bowling pins running around 😂.

Plus, tell me it is not adorable seeing my girl cackle with happiness over mealworms...

That IS adorable! I know that some of my current flock are Runner mixes, who knows what will come out of them.

I used to think Muscovy were ugly. Well, too many caruncles still turns me off, but I now find them to be absolutely amazing looking. Probably their personalities.:)

Speaking of, I've been noticing that, overall, my drakes are much friendlier towards me than my ducks. They seem to be more curious and inquisitive, and willing to approach. This is in both Muscovy and the Mallard breeds.

I agree, Fall is my favourite time of year. I love the colours and the smells! Only thing I dislike is it means winter will be here soon...

Muscovy do have wonderful personalities.

I am not sure if my drakes are more friendlier. My Saxony drake is definitely the most cuddly duck I have. He will submit to daily cuddles and actually likes it sometimes. I have heard of muscovy drakes being super friendly. I think I would need to raise one from a duckling to see that.

Introduced the newest ducklings to the flock today. The mallard-breeds seemed more put-off, although Pudding, the blue pied drakeling, ran after them to show them their place! :D Needless to say, poor pudding is the one that ended up getting schooled.

The other Muscovy were fine with them, and Mist and Mocha showed very parental attitudes towards them. It was adorable!

Clockwise, from the bottom left: Pudding (blue pied male), Dulce (chocolate pied female), Cookie (black pied male), Mocha (sub-adult chocolate female), Strudel (blue female), and Mist (sub-adult blue bibbed male). Xylog the blue-laced red Wyandotte rooster photobombed.
