Flock-herder wanna-be in Wasilla, AK

Easter Eggers will lay you colorful eggs in shades of blue and green, or you can get purebred Ameraucanas, or Araucanas. I know many ducks naturally lay green tinted eggs too but not sure which breeds. There is a duck thread though, that might be helpful.

Great, Ameraucanas are on my list, too. Had one of those growing up. No, our chickens can't see Russia - too many trees.

The place in my Avatar is a farmhouse in Lower Brockhampton, England with it's own Moat! ...I want one some day: a moat so my farm can peacefully roam without fences to block their view! Yep, AK is the best state ever - glad you got to visit.

Re: ducks: someone up here said they owned hybrid ducks shipped from somewhere down south that laid daily. I want some! A google search found: "Metzer Farms (located in Gonzales, CA) 'developed' the Golden 300 Hybrid. This hybrid was created by crossing the attributes of different duck breeds. The Golden Hybrid can lay 230 eggs in 40 weeks in comparison to the typical egg-laying duck, the Khaki Campbell, who will lay 195". But, another site said 285 & 300, respectively... http://www.efowl.com/Golden_300_Hybrid_Layer_Ducks_p/1072.htm & http://www.metzerfarms.com/Golden30...olden 300 Hybrid Layer&BirdType=Duck&ID=GOLDE are places to purchase them.
Chicken eggs are so common up here now, that having another kind available would be great for variety, and they're bigger. Our animal food warehouse and at least one thrift store in town has a pick-up/drop-off fridge located in their store for local poultry owners to market their eggs. Cheapest I've seen is $3/doz. for chicken eggs, but most go for $4-5 since they're healthier, etc. Do you have this option where you are?

Looking to start this year! Already have a fence and small coop for summertime use. Will need plans for a lighted, insulated winter coop & where's the best place to get chicks around here? No preference except we really like green/blue eggs and breeds that will lay all year long. How many chickens should we get for our family of 6? Also, I've heard of the hybrid ducks that lay real good - where can they be found? Thanks!

How is it going for ya? I'm off KGB. Just got 5 pullets this weekend. Coop done. Just reading the posts to get more info:)
