Hotwire 6-8" off the ground and 4-6 inches on top of your fence./there are standoffs for fence (I had to modify some. But easierst and cheapest, is to cut PVC into 12" lengths, drill a hole thru it and run dog hotwire thru it. Twist loops for the handles at gates. I use the handles you can buy for electric fence at any farm supply or online like Valley Vet, etc. Should keep anything out except "Fly-ins".

LGD-livestock guard dog. While LGD's may not always bond with poultry, they definately protect "their" territory. And believe me, everything is "theirs". Our Great Pyrenees is very possessive of her yard, her food, her everything. The coop in the yard is hers too, even if she is not too crazy about the chickens, by golly, nothing else better try to get to them. So sorry about your loss.

Sorry for your loss. Good to hear you are planning on how to protect the next flock. I've always wondered how many of our members suffer this sort of devastation, never bother to post, succumb to the lacerations to their gumption and just give up.

We keep three live traps out at all times (along drainages coons travel). Chooks whining and growling, over the baby monitor, woke us up in the middle of the night during our first year having them. Shined spot out back. One coon in trap and two more on roof of coop. They couldn't get in but, one of them had pulled up several shingles from the plywood roof (why we now use three live traps).

You both hang in there and best of luck!

I built my coop on a concrete slab, nothing is digging through that !you will be good, just remember to shut the door at night.

how far down are you going to go with a footing ? instead why not take 8 to 10 inches of dirt out of the run area and put down wire or chain link fence then put the dirt back over it. you can even hook it to the 1 foot fence that you have buried
