Flock Raiser - omega 3?

Hello all,

I like the idea and the reviews of the Purina Layena Omega 3 feed for when my 1W chicks reach laying age. Bright orange yolks and enough omega 3 to replace a fish oil pill sounds awesome to me!

However, I also like the idea of Flock Raiser given with free choice oyster shell on the side because as birds molt, or hens are replaced, etc, my food situation can remaining constant in all scenarios.

Is there a mix that is Low calcium (like starter, starter/grower, or flock raiser) with added omega 3s? Basically “Layena Plus Omega 3s minus the Layena calcium content”?

I don't know of one off the top of my head but you could add a small amount of flax seed if you can't find any.

There are a few in TSC, Starter, Grower and Layers feed. I'm mobile at the moment.
Check their website.
I know Scratch & Peck's Starter and their Grower have flax.

Basically only that scratch and peck brand , none that are comparable in price to Purina. Guess I will use Purina omega 3 feed!

I have to mention that just because my sheet doesn't have Omega 3's listed does not necessarily mean that it is not included in the feed...it just means that it was not/is not on the feeds guaranteed analysis label.


Eggland's best has added 3's in their grower feed.

If you only have laying hens, a good layer feed may make sense. It's designed for laying flocks that ar comprised of all laying hens; nobody is old, broody, or molting. Or too young to me laying, or male.
In my mixed age and sexed flock, Flock Raiser works best, with oyster shell on the side, to best support all my birds. It's available locally with good mill dates, and I'm not committed to feeding organic, or a 'special ingredient' diet.
