Flocks not merging

Hi All,

I’ve been raising chickens successfully for some years now (thanks in large part to this community) but I’m stumped and hoping you can help again.

I have 6 adults (~ 18 months old) and 6 new birds (~ 5 months old). Like I have with every other new group of birds in the past, they are raised in an enclosure inside the chicken run so that they are around each other for a few months before I combine. Usually, once I take out that enclosure, there’s up to a week of intra-flock “discussions” before all calms down and they are one flock.

This time, however, it’s 3 weeks without any improvement. The new birds are harassed and scared to come out of their corner unless the older group is out in the free range.

Oddly enough, they all roost together at night.

Am I concerned? Is there anything I can do other than remain patient?
