I can't find any red lights other than 25w "party" lights and they are simply not hot enough. I bought a red 85 watt flood light, but it does not turn on when I screw it into the shop light I am using in my brooder. Do you need a special socket or is the light a dud (box was resealed at store like someone already brought it back once).

Hi, you might have gotten a bad bulb. I used the same thing BUT in a brooder light purchased from Lowe's. The heavy duty brooder light has a ceramic socket which is important because they get very hot especially because they are left on 24/7, there is a chance of fire with reg. shop light because of there plastic sockets melting. It's better to be safe then sorry.
