farmgirlie1031 and d.c. thanks for checking in and hope you too are ok.

farmgirlie1031 when you mentioned Tyson I thought of the chicken "farms",; do you know if they are flooding?

Tyson is close enough to the river there is a chance of flooding. This one is a meat processing plant and not an actual farm where they raise the animals. I think the main reason they have to close though is all the roads around here are getting closed down as they build a 9 foot high sand/dirt levee to protect town. It could back up and flood there also as they are near the river backwaters.

Here's a wikipedia link about Columbus Junction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Junction,_Iowa

And
some more news stories links for my town.

But we aren't as bad as other places in Iowa where entire towns have to evacuate right now due to flood.

Sorry this is long. Just thought I'd give anybody who wanted them links. I know lots of states are dealing with floods. I hope everyone is ok.

She was serious.

I just heard Iowa City is now having a mandatory evacuation. Cedar Rapids already had a real bad flood:( Most of the town of Cedar Rapids is under water and they only have one well that is clean for the entire town:( Our town's (Columbus Junction, IA) crest is suppossed to be Sunday or Monday and we got some wicked storms last night that added even more water to the situatation. What makes Columbus Junction so bad is that the Iowa and Cedar rivers meet between us and Fredonia. My father did not even try to drive to work today after it took him 4 hours (a normal 25 min. drive time) to get home driving around the flood waters last night and now even those roads/highways are closed. We are okay and I am thankful for that. Tyson is closed until next week in our town due to the flooding and road closures. They think the road to Tyson will be under water and workers couldn't get there. We got like 4 inches of rain overnight. The creek running through our place turned into a small river for awhile but luckily the house sits further back and uphill from it. It did flood my duck area for a few hours until the water receded but the ducks had fun swimming in it and didn't get hurt so that was good news for them I guess.

Sandbagging and voluntary evacuations are going on in earnest here now. I stocked up on food for everyone (chicks, dogs, cats and us!) just in case we are cut off from Keokuk. The next largest town is 45 minutes away and I don't want to drive there if I don't have to. There is farm machinery sitting in strange places to get it up out of the bottoms. We plan on helping fill sandbags tomorrow. Hopefully that will keep help the river at bay.
