Floor coating options

Your issue is you used something that is for concrete foundations and those get backfilled with dirt. See if you can find some vinyl plank flooring really cheap at the big box stores. It snaps in place and is floating. You can try a silicone the edges. That should get rid of most of the foundation coating smell.

Thanks! That makes sense. This will probably be my next step. However, I was thinking of using those vinyl sheets? I've got a fan in there now so hopefully it'll dry and destink enough the next day or two, and I can lay the vinyl on top.

My thoughts are vinyl sheets are normal glued down. I don't think you're going to get glue to stick to the coating you applied. That's why I suggested a floating plank floor.

But they don't need to be, mine isn't and has held up fine for 10 years.
It is tacked in places, like across thresholds.

We use a horse stall mat. It protects the plywood floor and is removable for cleaning.

I did not use the popular liquid rubber you speak of. I figure any similar liquid rubber would be okay. I guess I was wrong? If you're curious, this is what I picked up from Menards.

or rain arrives before coating dries.
• Do not apply if rain is imminent or forecast

Yeah, the weather didn't seem too cold or hot or wet. In any case, I put a fan at the door and dried it - though once it got hot, it got sticky again, though not as smelly. We put sheet vinyl on top and the problem is solved. I haven't noticed any smells and the chicks are in. I figure it was a good lesson learned, which seems to be the theme this past year on our newly acquired acreage.

I see a lot of people recommend the bj57 floor coating and some against it bc it is petroleum based. Looking around I saw other options that no one seems speak about or at least I can’t find ( if I missed the thread I apologize).
These products are water based and the ones all Claim To be eco Friendly.

Anyone use these products or decide against them?

I am building a new coop. Plan is plywood floor built off the ground.

I was thinking about doing peel and stick vinyl tiles on top of the plywood, but that will be slippery for the girls. Thoughts?

I think it’s borderline too hot outside to do any of the paint/apply products.

Hey there Molon! I am in the same boat current as you and wanted to see if you made a decision on your flooring? I am in the waterproofing industry and know the dangers all of their material data sheets say. I have been going around and around trying to make the best decision for my girls and i think i have come to the conclusion that nothing is 100% safe and all we can do is the best we can.

With that being said, i bought a gallon of the Flex Seal last night from Lowes ( https://www.lowes.com/pd/Flex-Seal-...fl-oz-White-Dip-Rubberized-Coating/1000097850 ) and will be going with that for my OSB floor board coop and then aspen shavings over the top. It will be non-slip, easy to clean and will seal all of the cracks from bugs and drafts. It is advertised as non-toxic and safe for plants and animals. However, it does say on the side that it has Toluene in it which is linked to birth defects and other side effects.

Everything except straight plywood on this side will have similar side effects so at the end of the day a decision has to be made and this is the one i am going with.

Hi @ChirpyBrooke ! I am now in the same boat as you - looking at that same FlexSeal product for a new coop floor. How are you liking it? Do you think you made the right choice? Any thoughts would be valuable information for this super newbie.
