Floor of chicken run

Am I stressing about nothing?
Yep.

I tend to be a tad type A. Thanks for calming the storm.

Stressing about your babies is normal. You are a good mama hen!

I agree with the sand. The chickens will scratch in it and turn up the dirt underneath, and that's okay -- they like having something to do.

Since your coop has a lot of space though, may I suggest an idea? I have hard dirt under one of our coops too, and there's no vegetation for them at all (this is at our coop at our cabin, where they can't free-range either, like they do at home, so I feel awful for them!) so I have started buying pieces of sod to lay in the coop so they have a soft green place to relax and snack. I cut one long piece in half, and I plan to rotate them in the coop, so that they can grow back in between. Just a thought....

Unless the run is completely waterproof, I would nix the straw. Straw collects and holds moisture and thereby leads to mold and disease causing fungi. Also the poop glues the straw together and is the very heck to clean out. Most go with sand, and I have never heard a complaint about that.

Yep.

ok so it is best to use sand year around.
